Central Saanich

The Central Saanich region, on the peninsula which runs north and toward the east from the City of Victoria, is defined by its rural, agricultural past and still contains a number of working farms and vineyards, in addition to offering opportunities for today’s hobby farmers. With water to the west and the east, and a favorable climate for growing vegetables and flowers, the region is popular with those who appreciate fresh food and the colorful displays of nature. Central Saanich Homes Information

The acclaimed Butchart Gardens are perhaps the best-known attraction of Central Saanich, however, and the more than 100-year-old grounds continue to be developed and evolve, to the delight of visitors. Special activities are planned on the grounds summer and winter, and the gardens are still owned by the Butchart family. Jennie Butchart commissioned an original Japanese garden in 1907, with a nearby quarry becoming a sunken garden a few years later when its limestone was depleted.

While Mrs. Butchart was the driving force behind the gardens, exotic birds and animals fascinated her husband Robert. Today, sculptures at the gardens reflect that passion as well.

To choose this area is to consciously embrace the concept of slow growth while honoring an agricultural past; and to opt for an enriching lifestyle far removed from the complexities of modern development. But there is nothing backward about Central Saanich.
