Image Credit: https://www.flickr.com/photos/bahman2005/309144619The legacy and heritage of the First Nations people lives on in Victoria. They honor the legacy and heritage by having a number of different dances, ceremonies and pottlatches. This type of experience is unlike any other experience you have ever had. It will add a ton of value to your visit.

This year the city welcomed the Aboriginal Cultural Festival to town for the first time. It took place from June 19th to June 21st. The Aboriginal Tourism Association of BC and the Esquimalt and Songhees First Nations partnered together to host this amazing event.

This, like all other annual events in the area, will help increase engagement in the community. There will be singing, dancing, storytelling and great food. These three days will be full of fun and adventure.

Southeastern Vancouver is home to a variety of different cultures and people. Most of which are part of the Saanich Nation of Coast Salish peoples. In the late eighteenth century, before the arrival of the European people, there was just one Songees fortified village in the area. It was in Beacon Hill Park at Finlayson Point.

When Fort Victoria was established in 1854 the village was moved to what is now known as Victoria West. Today you will find the Esquimalt Nations and the Songhees Nations reserves right on the edge of Victoria. They border each other and the town of View Royal. Other Nations such as the T'Souke and Scia'new bands are located along the Sooke Basin.

The Aboriginal Culture Festival will introduce you to not only these nations but a variety of other nations as well. You will learn about history, culture and so much more.

One thing I believe you will really enjoy is the story telling. The elders share the history of the culture by telling stories about their ancestors. The Aboriginal culture is not known for writing down their history. It is based on what the elders remember. However, these days they have started to record their storytelling gatherings so the history will never be lost or forgotten.
