City Council has been working to develop a new strategic plan for Victoria. Their goal is to create a plan in which the next four years will be guided by decisions of the municipality with a concrete plan and deliverables. It takes place before the Financial Plan is developed so that strategic priorities are used to guide the financial planning. The plan will include financial and operational plans and the public was included in planning sessions in early February. Here is a look at their strategic planning for Victoria.

January and February’s Planning

In January and February of this year, the city council completed the strategic planning process. The objective was to develop the concrete and clear plan and deliverables to guide decision making for the municipality for the upcoming four years.

The public was able to have a say in planning on February 2, 3 and 5th at Victoria City Hall’s Council Chambers. The plans that were made were intended to be used as a reference point for assessing performance and will be reviewed quarterly to update according to priorities and the will of Council. The public’s input will help align City’s programs and services in order to meet community expectations and provide taxpayers with involvement in decisions that directly affect their lives.

What issues were discussed?

The meeting looked at topics like:

  • Enhancing green space and food systems
  • Striving for excellence in planning and land use
  • Facilitating social inclusion and community wellness
  • Creating prosperity through economic development
  • Completing a multi-modal and active transportation network

The proposals included adding a fenced dog park to an existing park, making Victoria a people-centred place by enlivening public space, creating accessible health services for Victoria’s most marginalized people and much more.

What happens next?

The notes from the February 5th meeting are being reviewed and will be used to form a draft for consideration by the Council. The public’s feedback on both the financial plan and the strategic plan will be used in consideration for the Council before any final decisions are made.

Planning will continue as the public’s input is reviewed.
