The cycling network found in Victoria is quite popular. It has been updated to include even more features and to provide even more for the residents of the city. The improvements are mapped out for the next 25 years and include some great highlights.

New Features Expected to be Added

Some of the new features will make it easier to get to attractions, schools and more. The highlights of the new cycling network map include:

  • Connections to all the public schools, senior centres and community centres
  • Better connections in the downtown area
  • All town centres and urban villages will be within just one block of a cycling route
  • Saanich, Esquimalt and Oak Bay will all have better connections
  • Routes for "All Ages and Abilities will be introduced to provide a high-quality and low-stress cycling experience.

Along with these new updates, it's important to see what they cycling network already includes.

The Current Cycling Network

There are many things that the current bike network includes. There are about 41 kilometres of marked bike lanes. In 2013, the city added about 7 kilometres, which was the largest increase to date. Along with these bike lanes, the network includes:

  • Multi-use Trails - About 2.6 kilometres of shared trails for both cyclists and pedestrians including the Galloping Goose Trail.
  • Buffered Bike Lanes - About 2 kilometres of buffered bike lanes to give cyclists more space.
  • Signed Bike Routes - About 18 kilometres of signed bike routes are found to provide cyclists with the best routes. Often these are more scenic and quieter than other potential routes.
  • Bike Boxes - Found at three intersections
  • Bike Detection Loops - These loops make it possible for bikes to trigger signal changes.
  • Bike Parking - Over 1,000 bike parking spots are found in downtown

As the cycling network found in Victoria continues to grow it will be able to accommodate even more cyclists.
