Fishhook was established in August 2014 by Kunal Ghose, a Gold Medal Plates alum and former ‘Top Chef Canada’ contender. Best known for its tartine – the French open-faced sandwich topped with a fancy spread, Fishhook also serves a wide variety of soups, salads and pickles. They also offer wheat-free, dairy-free and mayo-free food for those who prefer healthier diet.
All the ingredients are locally supplied and farm fresh, with an emphasis on sustainability. Their suppliers are carefully selected from the Victoria mainstays: Irene’s Bakery supplies both regular sourdough and “No Wheat Added” baguette and Saanich Organics provides fresh and organic vegetables.
The Menu
Fishhook features a rotating menu, which includes nine tartines, three salads, pickled seasonal veggies and two mains. The salads, soups and curry are made without wheat, dairy and egg. Some of the popular fish curries they serve are:
- The Biryani – A coconut curried pilau, topped with fresh local wild seafood
- The Pondicherry – Kebabs or koftas made with fresh local seafood, with Indo-spiced masala & basmati
The recommended tartines are:
- The Tuna Melt – Made with Caramelized broccoli smash, Cheddar, Cold smoked albacore tuna crudo & smoked tonatta sauce
- The Belly – Made with Broil-seared wild salmon belly dog, Smoked salmon belly bacon, Spicy sauerkraut , Herb’d chive-mustard & Shaved daily pickles
As for dessert, choose from an array of Kid Sister frozen delicacies, such as hazelnut dulce de leche paleta and local blackberry mousse.
Happy hour is from 3pm to 5pm daily and customers can choose from a selection of beers and wines, such as Hoyne Brewery, Merridale Cidery and BC Wines.
