Lone Tree Hill Park is found off Millstream Road and provides plenty of great activities for adults and children. The park is just over 31 hectares large and found closest to the Highlands area of Victoria. It was established in 1982 and stays open from sunrise to sunset every day.
Don't let the smaller size of this park fool you, it provides a great experience with an intimate feel. The trails throughout the park are rated as moderate to challenging and you can climb above the highlands to the summit of Lone Tree Hill. This summit is 364 metres high and provides an amazing view of the area. You can see the Malahat, the Highlands and the Olympic Mountains from the summit.
Climbing the hill provides a great place for birdwatchers to potentially spot a bald eagle, red-tailed hawk, raven or turkey vulture. You can also enjoy the many rare plants throughout the area. The spring is the best time to climb the hill when all the wildflowers are in bloom, but it's still magnificent in the summer.
The park received its name because of a bonsai-like Douglas-fir tree, called a "Heritage Tree." It only stood four metres tall, but it was a feature of the hillside for over 200 years.
Whether you come out to Lone Tree Hill Park for a picnic, to climb the summit or just to get away from the noise and busyness of regular life, it's a great escape. Just take the Trans-Canada Highway to Millstream Road and turn right. Up the road, you will find the park and after about 30 minutes of driving from Victoria, you will be able to escape into the tranquil environment.
Take the entire family or just escape on your own. Either way, you can enjoy plenty of what Mother Nature offers at Lone Tree Hill Park.
